Most heading extensions print an H1 to H6 list and stop there. Teardown starts with the question that comes before that one: can this page rank at all. It reads the robots tag, canonical, hreflang and page language first, then works down through structure, metadata, images and content, and scores the page out of 100 in a way you can actually explain to a client.
What I set out to do
- Indexability first: robots directives, canonical, hreflang and the declared page language.
- Heading structure linted against the full markup, while the outline it shows you contains only the headings a reader can physically scroll to.
- Keyword analysis scoped to the main content, so navigation and footer text stops skewing the numbers.
- Images a right-click will never find: CSS backgrounds, picture srcset markup and video poster frames, plus alt text coverage across the lot.
- A score out of 100 you can explain to a client rather than just quote at them: indexability 30, structure 25, metadata 25, image alt text 20.
What came out of it
- 240 automated checks across five suites, all green
- Around 5,500 lines of vanilla JavaScript, no framework and no build step
- The packaged extension is 52KB across 11 files
- Shipped to the Chrome Web Store at version 1.7, Manifest V3
